Inaugural DeTour (Cardboard) Freighter Race 2005
They were made out of various wheels/axels including old mower decks, lawn chairs, wheel dollies, and wagons, a small amount of random wood for structure, plus a generous supply of cardboard, paint and imagination.
Unfortunately the Edgar Speer suffered a "holing" and dropped an axel. And in addition, after winning one heat, The Mackinaw Islander Ferry met a horrible end during the "race", when the 4 drivers got out of control and the (engineered) Lawn Chair frame collapsed, leaving a mound of cardboard on top of Sandy W., and actually injuring her finger.
Official Rules for 2005: (these rules will vary for 2006, guaranteed) 1. Construction: Primarily Cardboard and maybe some wood, (or whatever else you had in your garage) wheels are good but optional, tape is also good, paint is important (if you just drag a painted box down the road. you WILL probably be Boooood by the crowd) 2. Cost for construction materials is limited to be less than the actual prize money. 3. Entry cannot be “Actual Size”, we cannot support an “Actual Sized” entry in this race, we only have one block setup for the race. 4. If there is anything left of your entry after the race, save it to be a parade float tomorrow.
